Our Lay Leader

George Lurie grew up in Teaneck, NJ and attended a conservative synagogue there until age 17. He stopped practicing for about 22 years until he and his daughter joined a Reconstructionist synagogue in the Harrisburg, PA vicinity in 1986. George served there in many capacities including Vice President, Membership Chairman, and member of the Ritual Committee.  He taught Hebrew School for 5 years and started their Junior Congregation. 

George and his wife Karen moved to the OBX in May of 2003. He began leading services as the JCOB’s lay leader in February of 2004 and continues in that capacity for all religious events.  He has performed three Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, several baby namings, and several funerals.  He currently teaches Hebrew to three pre-Bat Mitzvah children and three older adults.  George resides in Martin’s Point with his wife and two cats.
